Footballer Steven Gerrard has been charged with assault and affray following a nightclub brawl.
Steven Gerrard in The Lounge Inn shortly before the alleged incident.
The England player and Liverpool captain was charged this morning along with two other men who had also been arrested after a “disturbance” outside the Lounge Inn, a late-night bar in Southport, Merseyside, in the early hours of Monday morning.
The venue’s DJ, a 34-year-old local man, received hospital treatment after suffering facial injuries.
Gerrard, 28, was released from Southport police station early this morning.
In a statement, his club said: “Steven has been an outstanding servant to Liverpool for the last 10 years and the club will give him all the support he needs at this time.”
The Lounge Inn where the alleged incident took place
Gerrard was at the restaurant and bar – which turns into a nightclub – with friends to celebrate Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Newcastle United.
A police statement said: “Merseyside Police has charged Steven Gerrard, 28, of Formby, John Doran, 29, and Ian Smith, 19, both from Huyton, Liverpool, with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray, following an incident at Bold Street in Southport.
“The three men will appear at North Sefton magistrates court on January 23.”
Gerrard and the two other men have been bailed. Three other men arrested in connection with the incident were released on police bail pending further inquiries.
Gerrard has been capped by England 70 times and has captained his country on four occasions.
He was made an MBE last year and received an honorary fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University.
Fresh from firing two goals against Newcastle on Sunday, Steven Gerrard was involved in a nightclub fracas that has seen the England midfielder charged with ABH.
It is almost the anniversary of fellow Scouser, Joey Barton’s Merseyside brawl that saw him spend three months at Her Majesty’s pleasure.
Should the Liverpool captain be convicted, it will be interesting to see how many of those calling for Newcastle to sack Barton will be equally vociferous in wanting Gerrard to be shown the door by the league leaders, ditched from the England set-up or even stripped of his MBE.

footballer attacked rival player with a chainsaw

A footballer who drunkenly attacked a rival player with a chainsaw after he was sent off was spared jail yesterday.
Anthony Lloyd was red-carded for bad language but came back wielding the power tool and tried to chop the hands off Paul Westwood while yelling: “I’m a crank.”
Prosecutor Laura Plant told the court: “They heard an engine start and saw the defendant coming out of the bushes revving a chainsaw.
“The victim’s friend ran off, leaving him cornered.”
The court heard Lloyd, 20, started thrusting the chainsaw at Mr Westwood, cutting his chest.
Ms Plant said: “He tried to chop his hands off while Mr Westwood was defending himself. He then walked off.”
Guildford crown court heard Lloyd, who had been drinking and has a history of drug abuse, had seven previous convictions and was on a conditional discharge for possessing a knife when he went on the rampage in Horley, Surrey.
At the hearing on Friday, Lloyd admitted possessing an offensive weapon and affray.
Judge Neil Stewart sentenced him to 12 months’ jail, suspended two years, and ordered him on a drug rehabilitation programme.
He told him: “You had been drinking, you were unpleasant, you went away and then for some reason you brought back a chainsaw. Paul Westwood was at your mercy, cowering under a bush. Mercifully, almost miraculously one might say, it only resulted in a superficial cut.
“Your offending is closely tied up with the extent to which you will carry on taking drugs and drinking.”
After the hearing, a pal of Mr Westwood said: “Paul couldn’t believe Lloyd wasn’t locked up – he’s a danger to society. He gets off his face on drink and drugs and can’t control his temper.”

Seems like Joey Barton is in the news for the wrong reason every day, having just served time for an assault in Liverpool, he could yet face more legal action. In 2004 Joey Barton assaulted team mate James Tandy at his old clubs Christmas party. It is alleged that Barton stubbed a lit cigar in the eye of his former team mate Tandy.
Mr Tandy, 23, says the attack ruined his career and sparked a “major psychiatric deterioration”. He said: “That incident destroyed my life.” He has now begun legal action to sue Barton.
Barton now plays for Newcastle United, at the time of the attack he was fined £60,000 by his old club Man City. He has only recently been released from jail as he was detained for 74 days of a 6 month sentence, after being caught on CCTV attacking a teenage boy in Liverpool.
Barton is also on a suspended sentence for assaulting another former teammate, the assault happened against Ousmance Dabo on the training ground whilst he was still a City player.
Willie McKay, Barton’s agent said he knew nothing about any new legal action.
Kevin Keegan, Newcastle manager said” Joey has made mistakes but I think he deserved a second chance”
Brian Nicholson a Newcastle season ticket holder said” there is no doubt that Joey can play, although I’m yet to see it at Newcastle, Joey has had lots of chances and this one has got to be his last”
